This is an exceptional large and long antique Plateau region necklace, attributed to the Umatilla people, dating to the late 1800’s to early 1900s. This necklace is incredible, four large and long strands of Bohemian glass trade beads that were imported as trade items to Native tribes, Bohemia being the areas that are now Germany and Czechoslovakia. These beads are often called “cornerless cubes” by collectors, even though they are five sided. These beads are pretty substantial and weighty, each bead measuring about 8mm, and the necklace measuring 44” long. This necklace is complete and original, having been constructed and worn by a Native person, likely no later than the 1920s. Each row of beads is strung on a double strand of extremely discolored heavyweight cotton cord, and at the back the four strands of beads are joined by a heavy double strand of tied leather cord, deeply worn and weathered, beautiful patina, but still seems strong and wearable. You can see on one portion of the leather thongs that a repair was made by the original owner, one of the leather straps broke, and was secured with cotton cord, definitely an old repair. This piece is complete, antique, and authentic, in the region of 100 years old or older, and is a beautiful example of Western Native American ornamentation that was heavily influenced by Plains Indians styles in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The beads are a little bit rough, showing some wear, in a deep saturated red, and a clear crystal color, some grime and residue is visible between and inside the beads. This piece was purchased by myself better than 20 years ago, out of a large western Montana collection. An exceedingly rare and stunning piece, and guaranteed authentic. Enjoy.
