ART POTTERY BY A LEGENDARY CALIFORNIA ARTIST CERAMICS STUDIO
The Van Nuys, California Pottery operated from the early 1950s to the late 1960s. They made many interesting figurative TV Lamps with a nature theme and other figurative and functional pieces. There are collections of these items online that are well enjoyed.
This yellow with gold accents ashtray is probably from the 60s. It has a definite free-form modern shape, a break-away from the 50s perfect representation of nature such as birds, cats, lions, flamingos, poodles, exotic ladies, and bullfighters.
The glaze on the dish looks like it is still actively finding its place in the design. Fluid, but caught finally in time. These pieces were not stamped out, but carefully designed and executed by an artist potter.
SIZE  7 1/2" widest x 5 3/4 x 1 1/4" tall
CONDITION  Like new in its shiny glaze, just 3 tiny bites off the glaze, 2 in a cigarette notch, and 1 at the other end of the notches. (last photo) I have owned this for 12 years and only now have I discovered the flea bites; not used as ashtray here.
