Beautiful, signed FHR Los Angeles portrait "stove tile" which dates between 1906 and 1921, although likely pre-1910. This portrait of President McKinley was first produced by the American Encaustic Tile Co in a blue glaze, between 1893-1901. This was probably an early piece for FHR and given the subject, could be from a few years before he started the FHR Los Angeles business. This could have been commissioned for a similar purpose as the AETCO version for a political event on the west coast, or maybe was done as an experiment, sample or test, as we have not seen another by FHR. The relief and glaze are superb, and it creates a very realistically rendered form. Three of the corners have chips, but the damage does not extend beyond the border and the image is intact. There is normal crazing in the glaze. Measures about 2-3/4" square.
