The advantages of this product
Larimar is a blue-colored variety of pectolite that is found in the Dominican Republic and Italy. Its coloring varies from white to dark blue through different shades of blue.
History of description and appellations
On November 22, 1916, the priest Miguel Domingo Fuertes de Loren, of the parish of Barahona, applied to the ministry of the Dominican Republic for permission to explore and operate a mine he had discovered which contained some blue rock. . Since no one knew what he was talking about, the request was denied and the discovery of the blue stone was delayed.
The Larimar deposit was found in 1974 but was not exploited until 1976. Two residents of the village of Los Chupaderos, about 10 km from the town of Barahona, had noticed a light blue color on the sand of the beach and at the bottom of the Bahoruco River, which flows into the Caribbean Sea. Going upstream, they discovered the vein located upstream, at the top of a mountain covered with lush tropical vegetation. The name "Larimar" was given by Miguel Méndez by associating the name of his daughter LARIssa, and the sea MAR in Spanish.
The Los Chupaderos mine has two parts: on the one hand, the exploitation carried out by the state is mechanized, on the other small local operators who work with archaic means.
Synonymy
Dominican turquoise: this name is prohibited by the CIBJO (Word jewelery confederation).
Physicochemical characteristics
Larimar has been classified since 1979 as a fine stone. Its quality is evaluated according to its coloring: the deeper the blue of the stone, the more it is sought after.
Greenish colourations are also known but are not well regarded, unless the green is intense. The crystallization of this pectolite took place inside volcanic vents where the incandescent material was pushed by the gas. The operation of the Larimar therefore depends on the location of these chimneys. It is also found associated with other colors and other minerals. Red colorations in Larimar indicate traces of iron. This variety is photosensitive, which is why larimar loses its blue coloration over the years.
