Description
Welcome.WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT IT:
...a
ketoh which was made with very fine intricate, deep, stamp work on a rectangular sterling silver plaque which includes a detailed applied representation of a horse's head and also an applied arrowhead beneath, and has a set four sided shaped Royston mine stone in the center which is framed with twisted wire and three applied hand made raindrops on each of two sides of the stone. The plaque is set on soft leather with a traditional leather tie. It is quite unusual in my experience and I'm a sucker for horses, so I find it irresistible. The ketohs were originally intended as bow guards but became more decorative over the years, so were subsequently made for ceremonial use and worn at dances, as bracelets, and I wear the beautiful ones like this one as a bracelet personally. Because this piece has no discernible wear it may be a more contemporary piece. It's always harder to tell the age of a piece that was kept in a vault, however. The stamp work is superb and timeless with great depth and the imagery is gorgeous.
CONDITION: excellent vintage, wearable and collectible. It is in original condition and looks like new.
MEASUREMENTS:
• silver plaque c. 3-5/8" x 2-1/2"
• turquoise c. 7/8" x 3/4"
• leather length end to end 9-1/2"
• leather width 3-3/4"
• weight 116.25grams
• not marked for metal content but it's sterling silver at .925
• unsigned by the artist who is Navajo and unknown. If you know, I'd appreciate any information
SUMMARY: a beautiful ketoh with exceptional stamp work, very detailed and deep and dimensional. The horse's head is elevated as is the arrowhead because they are not only stamped but also applied. The work is excellent and the
Royston stone is beautiful. Its matrix is lovely against the dark brown leather. The leather is long but can be tied to fit a smaller wrist. This is a very nice collectible and wearable work of art.

Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target.
