4-axle Prussian mail car, short
Starting in 1902, the Reichspost procured 4-axle mail wagons from the Prussian Railway Administration as letter mail wagons (type IIIa) and as combined letter and parcel mail wagons (type IIIb) with a 12 m box length. These squat looking mail wagons proved their worth and were built until 1908. Mail wagons with a length of 12m were widespread at the time, all 4-axle designs produced 325 units and were thus even more widespread than the "long" 4-axle mail wagons with a box length of 17m.
After the First World War, wooden post wagons were no longer procured, steel wagons with longer car bodies increasingly entered the service of the short mail wagons. In the 1950s, a few type IIIa / b mail wagons were still in use.
