    Description

    Welcome!
This is an exciting, rare and important find, originating in an estate collection. I'm offering for your consideration a stunning very old bolo of a standing buck with a raincloud, inlaid into silver in images which are similar but not identical to those in the CG Wallace catalog for the Sotheby's auction. The buck is always inlaid into shell or silver, it appears, and this is the first time I've seen it inlaid into silver. The bucks also have some differences in design. I don't know if those differences are related to time or the inlay into silver rather than shell. It is hard to be sure of the attribution because of a few things. The Lambert Homer attribution comes from the one mention in one book, with no correlating attributions, and his information has a fairly high rate of error. And, this buck has differences from those. This could be due to the development of the artist, trying new things. This is a front facing buck and the others, side. The others more like pottery figures and rock art and this one more realistic. These changes can be attributed to time and experimentation or perhaps it's a different artist. Certainly this one is a great master of that same period. Although the attribution is uncertain, there is no doubt this is an important piece and a rare example.
Note that these bucks always appears with other images. In this case there is a classic raincloud image inlaid into the bolo. This bolo was probably made in the 1940s; it has hand made wires in the back for the leather. You can see from the pictures that the upper two wires are bigger than the bottom two. I can make a suggestion for this. I bought a wonderful old bolo of this era that had strands of wool knotted through the wires. I think that is one solution so that all the wires fit the leather tie. That way both the wires and the leather are preserved as original and the bolo can be worn comfortably. The leather on this piece is still in wearable condition and no leather tie would fit all four wires. The tips are the very best fabulous old tips, hand incised and heavy. They are original to the piece and are approximately 2-1/4"(5.72 cm) high, a perfect height proportionally for the bolo which is 2-1/8"(5.40 cm) high and 1-1/2" (3.81 cm) wide at the top. The tie with the tips end to end measure about 39-1/2" (100.33 cm). Condition of the inlay seems perfect. The silver was so black with tarnish and patina that I wiped the front with a soft cloth so we could clearly see the inlay. There are no problems. I generally like to leave the patina alone but not when it hides the important workmanship. I didn't shine it up. The back remains black but I don't see any sign of any markings of any kind and that is usual for that period. The piece is probably sterling silver .925 and is at least coin silver .900. My extensive experience handling these pieces tells me it's sterling silver. But all the artists reused silver scraps, so any of the old pieces might test slightly less than sterling, if one had the ability to make such exquisitely fine tests. I do not. Speaking of exquisite, this is the sort of piece that gives us chills. We rarely find a piece so closely connected with the CG Wallace catalog. I've included that notation above.
I do have more information about the estate from which this bolo came and will be happy to share that with the buyer.
The last time I saw pieces with the similar buck on eBay there were two, priced at over 00 each, so I tried to make this one as affordable as possible, while still respecting its importance.
I recommend it without reservation for the best of collections.
This is wonderful bolo by one of the great master silversmiths, unique, especially compelling in it's mystique.
